Dr. Michael H. Silber attended medical school at the University of Cape Town. He trained in Internal Medicine and Neurology at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, and completed a fellowship in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa, and is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Neurologic Association, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Silber is a Professor of Neurology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and the Elliot and Marlys Badzin Neuro-Degenerative Sleep Disorder Professor. He is a past Co-Director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and received the 2010 Nathaniel Kleitman Award from the Academy for distinguished service to the profession. His research interests include restless legs syndrome, REM sleep behavior disorder and narcolepsy. He has published more than 140 peer reviewed publications, 30 book chapters and 3 books. He received the 2013 Sleep Science Award from the American Academy of Neurology,
Education has been a major focus of his career. He served as director of the Sleep Medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic for 14 years. He has taught in the neuroscience course in the Mayo Clinic Alex School of Medicine since 1992 and developed the online component of the course. He has taught neurology residents for more than 30 years. He was the medical director for the Mayo Clinic Clinical Neurophysiology Technology Program from 1993 to 2007, Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs of the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences from 2007 to 2013, and Dean of the school from 2014 to 2022. He has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings as well as at academic centers, including the Michael S. Aldrich Lectureship at the University of Michigan in 2023. He is a Legacy Member of the Mayo Clinic Academy of Educational Excellence. He has served in national education leadership roles, including as President of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and Chair of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors’ Council. He received the 2017 Excellence in Education Award from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
