Denise M Dupras, MD, PhD
Consultant, Division of Community Internal Medicine; Geriatrics and Palliative Care, Department of Internal Medicine; Associate Professor of Medicine; Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Denise Dupras, MD, PhD, completed an undergraduate degree in pharmacy at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, MI. In 1983, enrollment at Mayo Medical School began, culminating in the completion of a combined MD and PhD in biomedical sciences with a focus on pharmacology in 1989. Initially planning a career in anesthesiology, a realization during the first two months of internship led to a shift toward primary care, which has been Dr. Dupras’ focus of practice for the past 33 years.
Dr. Dupras completed a residency in Internal Medicine, followed by a one-year general medicine fellowship. During this time, research skills were applied to the critical reading and interpretation of medical literature. Recognizing the rapid pace of scientific advancements and the introduction of new medications, the need to assess whether these innovations significantly improve patient care became evident. This insight led to a commitment to Dr. Dupras teaching evidence-based medicine to students, residents, fellows, and medical professionals at local, national, and international levels.
With a strong foundation in pharmacology and critical appraisal skills, Dr. Dupras developed an ability to evaluate the evidence supporting FDA-approved medications, assess their comparative effectiveness, and review the numerous supplements available to patients. In primary care practice, frequent patient inquiries about various treatments and products prompted Dr. Dupras’ identification and use of accessible “just in time” resources to guide clinicians and patients in making well-informed decisions about treatment options and their potential benefits.
